Smart factory

A production facility where machines, materials and systems are instrumented and connected so operations can be monitored, analyzed and adjusted in near real time.

A smart factory is the concrete outcome of an Industry 4.0 program. Machines report status and quality data, materials carry identifiers that track them through the process, and a manufacturing execution system coordinates work orders against live capacity. Measures such as OEE become visible per machine and per shift instead of being estimated monthly.

The benefits are shorter changeovers, earlier detection of quality problems and better use of equipment. The obstacles are practical: mixed-age machinery, proprietary controller interfaces, and the need to keep the operational network isolated from the office network. Autonomous elements such as AGVs and AI-assisted scheduling arrive later, once the data foundation is solid. See AI agents on the factory floor for how agents fit in.
