Matter

An open smart home application standard, maintained by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, that lets devices from different brands work with any compatible controller over IP.

Matter defines a common data model and commissioning process for smart home devices so that a light, lock or thermostat can be set up once and controlled by Apple, Google, Amazon or Samsung ecosystems, or by an open platform such as Home Assistant. It runs over IP, using Thread for low-power devices and Wi-Fi or Ethernet for others, with local control that does not depend on a vendor cloud.

The standard addresses the fragmentation that made earlier smart homes frustrating, but it has limits: device types are added gradually, so some product categories are not yet covered, and existing Zigbee or Z-Wave gear needs a bridge. Certification by the Connectivity Standards Alliance is required to use the logo. The guide Matter explained walks through how commissioning and multi-admin control work.
