oneM2M

A global partnership standard that defines a common service layer for M2M and IoT platforms, so applications can use devices and networks through one set of interfaces.

oneM2M is a horizontal middleware standard developed jointly by regional telecom standards bodies, including ETSI. Instead of defining a radio or a device protocol, it specifies a common services layer that sits between applications and heterogeneous networks: registration, discovery, data storage, access control, subscriptions and device management, exposed through standard bindings to HTTP, CoAP, MQTT and WebSocket.

The goal is that a smart city application can read a parking sensor and a streetlight through the same API regardless of which vendor or network provides them, which directly targets interoperability across departments and suppliers. Adoption has been strongest in public-sector and operator-led platforms, particularly in Asia and Europe, while many commercial IoT platforms expose their own APIs. The trade-off is a comprehensive but complex specification that takes effort to implement fully.
