ETSI

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute, a standards body whose work includes the consumer IoT security baseline EN 303 645 and a founding role in oneM2M and 3GPP.

ETSI produces European standards for telecommunications and related technology, many of which become references far outside Europe. For IoT its best-known output is ETSI EN 303 645, a baseline of security requirements for consumer connected products: no universal default passwords, a way to report vulnerabilities, software updates, secure storage of credentials and so on. Several national labeling schemes and the UK’s PSTI regime map to it.

ETSI is also one of the founding partners of 3GPP and oneM2M, and it publishes harmonized standards that manufacturers use to demonstrate compliance with EU radio and, increasingly, cybersecurity requirements for CE marking. For a product team, that makes ETSI documents the practical bridge between a regulation’s intent and a test plan. The guide IoT security regulation explains where EN 303 645 fits.
