Remote patient monitoring (RPM)

The use of connected medical devices to collect a patient's vital signs or other health data at home and transmit it to clinicians for review.

Remote patient monitoring moves routine measurement out of the clinic. A blood pressure cuff, glucose meter, pulse oximeter or weight scale sends readings over Bluetooth Low Energy to a phone or a dedicated hub, which forwards them to a care platform. Clinicians see trends and get alerts when a value crosses a threshold, which allows earlier intervention for chronic conditions such as heart failure or diabetes.

The benefits are fewer hospital visits and earlier detection. The constraints are regulatory, since devices that inform treatment are medical devices, and human: patients must use the devices consistently, and clinicians need workflows that do not drown them in data. Privacy and secure transmission are non-negotiable. RPM is one part of medical IoT; see IoT in healthcare.
