ODMs offer a shortcut to a hardware product. They maintain reference designs for common devices, such as gateways, trackers, cameras or environmental sensors, and manufacture them with the customer’s logo, enclosure color, firmware branding and sometimes minor hardware changes. Because the design and certification are shared across customers, the NRE is far lower than a custom development and the time to market is months rather than years.
The trade-off is control. The customer, who is the OEM in market terms, depends on the ODM for firmware fixes, security updates and component changes, and competitors may sell nearly the same device. Vulnerabilities in shared ODM firmware have affected many brands at once, so contractual terms on source access, update commitments and vulnerability handling are as important as unit price when selecting a partner.
