Connectivity

Access Point Name (APN)

The identifier a cellular device presents to the operator to select which gateway and IP network it should be connected to, often used to isolate IoT fleets.

When a cellular IoT device attaches to a network, the APN tells the operator which packet gateway to use and therefore which IP address range, routing rules and services the device receives. A consumer phone uses the operator’s public internet APN. An IoT fleet typically uses a private APN that assigns addresses from the customer’s own range and tunnels traffic over a VPN or private link straight into the customer’s infrastructure.

That design keeps devices off the public internet, so a meter or a payment terminal cannot be scanned or reached by anyone outside the company, and it allows the backend to address devices directly for firmware updates or remote access. Misconfigured APN settings are a common reason a new module fails to get data. Operators and connectivity management platforms usually let customers define APNs per SIM group.
