Matter support by ecosystem

What Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant officially say about Matter versions, Thread border routers, device types and multi-admin.

Matter is one application standard, but each ecosystem decides which version it runs, which of its devices act as hubs and Thread border routers, and which device types it actually exposes in its app. A Matter logo on the box tells you the device is certified, not that every controller will show all of its features. This table collects what each ecosystem says in its own documentation. Where it says nothing, the cell reads "Not stated officially" rather than a guess from forums or reviews.

What is the latest Matter version?

The newest version on the Connectivity Standards Alliance specification download page is Matter 1.6.1; the page lists it without a release date. The Alliance's open-source Matter SDK tagged version 1.6.1.0 on 25 September 2026. The last feature release, Matter 1.6, was announced on 17 June 2026: it adds commissioning over NFC, Joint Fabric (several controllers co-administering one shared Matter network) and Thermostat Suggestions, and no new device categories.

Controllers trail the specification. The versions in the table are the ones each company states for its own products, which is why they range from 1.4.1 to 1.5.1 while the specification is at 1.6.1.

Last checked 22 October 2026. Ecosystems update hub firmware and support pages often, so check the linked page before you buy or certify against it. Apple Home

Not stated officially. Apple says only that iOS 16.1 and later include Matter support and that it keeps its Matter SDK up to date.

Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router. With iOS 18, Thread-capable iPhones can pair and manage Thread accessories locally, and iPhone 15 Pro and later can control them without a home hub.

An accessory paired with another Matter app can be added to Home by choosing it under "More options"; pairings sync through iCloud Keychain, and Settings lists each accessory's connected services.

Google Home

Google's Home APIs release notes (release 1.11, 23 September 2026) list Matter version 1.4.1.0 with experimental support for 1.5.0. The device type table gives a Matter version per device type (1.0 to 1.3). A single version for the hubs themselves is not stated.

Matter hubs: Google Home, Google Home Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Mini, Google TV Streamer (4K), Nest Wifi Pro. Of these, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Google TV Streamer (4K) and Nest Wifi Pro are marked as Thread border routers.

Published as a table: lights, plugs, switches, locks, thermostats, window coverings, fans, air purifiers, robot vacuums, dishwashers, laundry washers, smoke and CO alarms, doorbells and chimes, speakers, pumps, energy meters and a range of sensors. Types not in the table are described as not officially supported.

Google says Matter devices can be controlled from several Matter-certified apps at once, naming Apple Home and Amazon Alexa as examples.

Amazon Alexa

Matter-compatible Echo devices "support the Matter 1.5 Software Development Kit (SDK)", which enables a subset of Matter 1.5 and lower device types.

Samsung SmartThings

Matter 1.5: SmartThings says it supports "58 Matter device types through the 1.5 specification", with cameras as a new category.

A Thread device needs a Matter controller with a Thread border router. Samsung names the SmartThings 2018 Hub and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub as Matter controllers and says the SmartThings 2015 Hub does not contain a Thread router (it can use a third-party border router). Thread 1.4 network sharing launched on select hubs including the Aeotec Smart Home Hub and Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2. A current complete list of hubs that are border routers is not stated officially.

A count is stated (58 device types under Matter 1.5); the full list is not published on the pages we found. Matter camera support launched on the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, SmartThings Hub 2018 and ThingsOne Smart Home Hub.

"Share with other services" in the app generates a QR code and setup code for another platform; devices set up elsewhere can also be added to SmartThings.

Home Assistant

The Matter Server app 9.0 (announced 23 June 2026) upgrades to the Matter 1.5.1 specification; 1.6 is listed as coming soon. Home Assistant and its Matter server were certified by the CSA in 2025, after testing against the Matter 1.3 device types.

Home Assistant can be a border router through the OpenThread Border Router app with a Thread-capable radio such as Home Assistant Yellow, Connect ZBT-1 or Connect ZBT-2 (these ship running Zigbee, so Thread needs manual steps). It can also use Apple and Google border routers, but cannot configure them.

Not stated officially. The integration page does not publish a list of supported Matter device types.

"Share device" adds a Home Assistant device to another platform; a device already in Apple Home or Google Home can be added to Home Assistant, and "Manage fabrics" lists and removes controllers.

How to read it

  • Version. A controller's Matter version limits the features it can use, and each device type was introduced in a given version, which is why Google lists a version per device type. A feature a device supports stays out of reach until the controller supports it too.
  • Thread border routers. Matter over Thread needs at least one border router near the devices. Home Assistant notes that each vendor forms its own Thread network, so one home can end up with several; SmartThings documents Thread 1.4 network sharing, and Home Assistant's border router app now supports Thread 1.4.
  • Multi-admin. One device can belong to several ecosystems at once (each one is a separate "fabric"). Every ecosystem in the table documents multi-admin support.
  • Other ecosystems. Controllers from other brands exist; they are not in the table because we have not checked their official documentation.

Apple also announced HomeView in October 2026; Apple's announcement names it as a compatible home hub but does not say whether it is a Thread border router, so it is not in the table yet.
