In layered descriptions of IoT architecture, the perception layer is where physical quantities become data. It contains the sensors that measure, the actuators that act, the identification technologies such as RFID and barcodes, and the microcontrollers that read them. Everything above it works with numbers; this layer works with heat, light, pressure and motion.
Decisions made here are hard to undo. A sensor’s accuracy sets a ceiling on every analysis that follows, and a device deployed in the field with a poor power design will drain batteries no matter how clever the cloud is. The perception layer is also the most exposed physically, so tamper resistance and environmental ratings belong to its design. The IoT architecture layers guide describes how it connects to the network layer above.
