Microchip Technology

PIC, AVR and SAM microcontrollers, wireless modules and CryptoAuthentication secure chips

Microchip Technology produces PIC, AVR and Arm-based SAM microcontrollers, dsPIC digital signal controllers, PolarFire FPGAs, analog chips and wireless modules for embedded designs. For IoT it offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, Thread, Zigbee and sub-GHz modules and SoCs, Ethernet PHYs, time-sensitive networking switches and the ATECC608B CryptoAuthentication family that stores keys for cloud authentication. Its MPLAB X IDE and the newer MPLAB for VS Code tools, the MPLAB XC compilers and TrustFLEX provisioning service are used by engineers building sensors, meters and industrial controllers. Microchip also runs microchipDIRECT, an online store with published unit prices, programming services and free verification samples.

Main products

  • PIC and AVR 8-bit MCUs
  • dsPIC digital signal controllers
  • PIC32 and SAM 32-bit MCUs
  • SAM9 / SAMA5 / SAMA7 MPUs
  • PolarFire FPGAs
  • ATECC608B CryptoAuthentication
  • Wi-Fi / Bluetooth LE / sub-GHz modules
  • MPLAB X IDE and XC compilers

Pricing model

Parts and boards are sold on microchipDIRECT with public tiered unit prices in local currency (the ATECC608B-SSHDA-T shows between EUR 0.52 and EUR 0.78 per unit by quantity) and a quote option for larger volumes, plus authorised distributors. MPLAB X IDE is free, and since July 2026 the MPLAB XC PRO compilers are also free; functional-safety certification documentation is sold separately. Official pricing page.

Known limits

  • Volume pricing beyond the listed tiers needs an approved quote
  • MPLAB X IDE v6.20 is the last release supporting the PICkit 3 / ICD 3 / REAL ICE debuggers
  • MPLAB Harmony covers 32-bit PIC and SAM devices only
  • Functional-safety compiler certification documentation is a paid add-on

Alternatives in the directory
